At the annual Nassau County basketball awards dinner on March 12, the fruits of this season's tremendous boys basketball efforts were duly recognized. Coming off Mineola's first conference championship since 1986, junior swingman Sammy Seda was named to the All-County team and acknowledged as Conference ABC-IV Player of the Year. Seda, a three-year starter for the Mustangs, was the dominant rebounder and a key scoring option for this year's stalwart group. The All-County selection for basketball was the Mustangs first of its kind in the new millennium.
Adding to the trophy case, second year head coach Jim Hegmann was feted as Conference ABC-IV Coach of the Year. In two seasons at the helm of the Mustangs, Hegmann has produced an overall record of 23-14 (.621 winning percentage), finishing no worse than second in the conference. One of the privileges of the dinner is for the coach of the year to present All-Conference citations to deserving recipients. Among his handshakes that evening were to his own TJ guard tandem of senior point guard Gessner and junior shooting guard Winters.
The Mustangs were defeated in the first round of the playoffs in a hard fought contest in front of a sellout crowd at South Side High School. While Mineola had the Cyclones on the ropes late into the game, South Side rallied to victory. The Cyclones ultimately lost to the Jericho Jayhawks in the Nassau County championship game at SUNY-Old Westbury. Despite the outcome, the team was thrilled for this year's accomplishments and looks forward to raising the championship banner in the gymnasium next season.
