This game was an early season test for the young chiefs and they passed it, defeating Huntington 7-3. In their first games as a team, the Chiefs showed they have some talented players.
The strength of this team will be its team speed, a relentless checking defense and a well-balanced offensive scoring attack. It all begins in goal where goalie Joe Megiel (14 games) played an outstanding game. He frustrated Huntington throughout the game, making one save after another.
Defensively, the Chiefs forced Huntington players into numerous mistakes with a pressure defense. They constantly intercepted passes, forced bad shots, dominated on ground balls and played well on defense in terms of positioning.
The seven defensive players were Luke Pacher, Mark Cavalaro, Omar Burns, Charlie Clancy, Max Gerow, Michael Chase and Andrew Sluka.
Offensively, the Chiefs seven attackmen played hard and physical, getting ground balls, preventing clears and kept the pressure on Huntington the entire game. The seven attackmen are Tom McCune (one goal), Liam Mooney, Michael Scaldaferi (one goal), Kevin Small, Lewis Gramma, Connor Feit and Neal Ressa.
The Chiefs midfielders using their team speed and numbers, simply overwhelmed Huntington's middies. Mineola ran four midfielders and controlled ground balls by a margin of two to one thus preventing Huntington from mounting many good scoring threats. This enabled the Chiefs to pepper their opponent's goalie with numerous shots.
The last goal of the game was a thing of beauty as Joe Grimm fed Jake Lopez, who found Brendan Krebs on the crease and he blasted it by the Huntington goalie for Mineola's final goal.
The four midfield lines for the Chiefs were: white midfielders - Chris Ruscillo, Campbell Goulet (one goal), John Keyes and Will Kinney. Blue midfielders - Joe Grimm, Jake Lopez (one assist) and John Stabile. Gold midfielders - Dylan Parzych, Joe Salamone and Chris Keyes. Red midfielders - Brendan Krebs (four goals), Adian Diskin and Mike Wozniak.
When you play a hard and physical game, you will get penalties, six for Mineola. Mineola's man down defense prevented Huntington from scoring six times. Mineola's man down defensive unit members were: Joe Grimm, Joe Salamone, Mark Cavarlaro, Michael Chase and Charlie Clancy. It was a great first game for the third graders. Goalie Joe Megiel was awarded the game ball.
In a well-played game, Mineola had more chances than Bellmore, but could only score three times. Both teams were boosted by their goalies; Mineola's Joe Megiel had 10 saves; Bellemore's 14 saves.
Defensively, Mineola's defense continued to be extemely physical and aggressive, allowing only 13 shots on their goalie, but were caught out of position three times, leading to three scores by Bellemore.
Offensively, Mineola had 26 shots hitting the cage 17 times but only scoring three times. Goal scorers were Joe Grimm, Brendan Krebs and Mike Vella.
