The ice skating rink at Cantiague Park in Hicksville came alive with excitement and laughter on Wednesday, March 19 as children who lost a parent on 9/11 hit the ice with players from the New York Islanders, the Ice Girls, and the team's mascot, Sparky the Dragon. The evening was hosted by Tuesday's Children, the non-profit service organization, based in Manhasset and New York City that has made a long-term commitment to every individual who was affected by the events of September 11, 2001.
More than 100 Long Island family members and their children's mentors joined New York Islanders Bruno Gervais, Aaron Johnson, and Jeff Tambellini for a special meet and greet evening of ice skating, fun, and autographs. Tuesday's Children mentors are specially-trained adult role models who offer their mentees new opportunities, as well as provide guidance and support, enhance coping skills, and spend quality time with the children who lost a parent. The Mentoring Program is one of the many life-enhancing programs offered by Tuesday's Children.
"It is so important that we continue to provide these community-building opportunities and fun activities for the children," said Terry Grace Sears, executive director of Tuesday's Children. "It allows our families the time to be together, to share some fun and laughs, as well as to be with others who understand what they have been through. The community of support that has grown within our families and through the events and initiatives that Tuesday's Children has coordinated over the years is truly incredible," she said.
The event is part of an ongoing partnership with the New York Islanders and Tuesday's Children. "For over six years, the New York Islanders have offered their support to families who lost a loved one on September 11th. Their participation in events like these truly does make a difference in the lives of children who lost so much," said Sears. Tuesday's Children is proud to also be serving those who gave so much of themselves at Ground Zero--the Rescue and Recovery workers and First Responders and their families.
