Police have arrested a 24-year-old Mineola man who is a tenant of a home on Westbury Avenue for allegedly assaulting another tenant of the home who is in his 60s, according to police.
Police said Dandhi Bonilla Palacious became involved in a physical altercation with another man who lives in the home. According to police, the defendant allegedly became violent and allegedly assaulted the other tenant with a radio about his head and face. There were no guns involved.
When police officers attempted to arrest Palacious, he allegedly fought with police. He was charged with assault, possession of a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest.
Police said the victim of the alleged assault was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital.
Village of Mineola Superintendent of Buildings Dan Whalen recognized the house as one that was subject to illegal housing violations last year. According to Whalen, there was an individual who was legally renting the property, but was illegally subletting a portion of it, an attic, to someone else.
Whalen said the owner and the landlord were both summonsed and pled guilty and the home was then made to be compliant with village codes. According to Whalen, since the incident last week, there has been some information to come forward that violations may once again exist at the home.
According to the police report, there are at least three people living in the house since there were two tenants involved in the altercation and the police said another resident of the house called the police. The owner of the home isn't a resident of the property.
Whalen said after the police investigation concludes, the building department will commence its investigation.
