On March 14 and March 15, donate used bicycles, parts and tools regardless of the condition at the Wheatley School, 11 Bacon Road, Old Westbury.

The Wheatley School Afri-Bike Coalition is holding its third Afri-Bike Collection on March 14 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and March 15 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be accepting bicycles, bike parts, medical and school supplies, as well as monetary donations, to send to poverty-stricken Africans in Kopeyia, Ghana. Working in coordination with the Village Bike Project, a nonprofit organization, it will send these supplies overseas in two 40-foot shipping containers in April. The ultimate goal is to send 800 bicycles.

Bicycles can be brought to the main entrance at The Wheatley School, located at 11 Bacon Road in Old Westbury - nearest cross street is Jericho Turnpike (Route 25).

Bikes can also be dropped off at the following addresses anytime between March 15 and April 11: 10 Coachmans Court, Old Westbury; 22 Hill Lane, Roslyn Heights; and 4 Summit Avenue, East Williston.

All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

What bikes? Most residents of Ghana, a small West African nation, live on less than a dollar a day, do not own cars and do not have electricity or running water. Bikes are economical, environmentally friendly and easier to repair and maintain than cars. They are the most appropriate form of transportation for all Ghanaians of any age and gender. Bicycles increase access to school, work, marketplace and health care.

The Wheatley School Afri-Bike Coalition is a group of high school students who are interested in impacting their world. They are accepting all donations of used bikes and bike parts, bike safety equipment and monetary contributions for shipping costs on the days of collection. Over the last two years, over 200 bicycles have been collected. The bikes will be packed into shipping containers on April 13. It will take nearly $12,000 to pay for shipping.

Once the bikes have been shipped and received in Ghana, constant correspondence with the nonprofit organization workers already stationed there, will ensure the bicycles are properly distributed in free bicycle-maintenance workshop courses.
