Roaring with anger he blasted the village board. "This man was so mad," said our daughter, Annmarie, when she covered a meeting in 1972. I told her, "Don't worry, you will probably never hear from him again," but here Sal Cataldo is 38 years later, is still attending practically every village board meeting. He was a constant critic of both the then Citizens Party and the Hometown Party he said, "One was no better than the other." He used to call them Tweedledee and Tweedledum. When Mayor Ed Smith was defeated by Ann Galante of the Hometown Party, he seemed to increase his attacks. He frequently exposed wrongdoing and some of his criticisms were constructive. He also had a fine-tuned sense of humor which he would throw in to lighten the matter. He ran for office many times, but could never make a dent in the two major parties. Cataldo didn't have the money or organization to match the Citizen Party or the Hometown Party. In recent years he has become a fixture on Channel 18 and he used to write fiery letters to our paper. He has calmed down in recent years. He was the longtime president of the Italian-American Club, helped them buy their clubhouse and for eight years he has been the commander of the American Legion. He now attends most village functions and many people feel he serves a valuable purpose with his suggestions. When he ran for office we held public debates, with me always as the moderator. Cataldo and I have had been heated exchanges. Today, he is generally in support of Mayor Martins and was a strong advocate for Mineola having its own police department.

Many Vets of WWII were bitter that the Red Cross was charging soldiers for coffee and doughnuts. We have found that the orders came from Secretary of War Stimpson. The Troops of Britain, Australia and New Zealand were charged by their Red Cross and it was felt that it would make our allies look bad if our coffee and doughnuts were free.

Is Tom Suozzi losing his popularity? When the county executive addressed the Chamber of Commerce two years ago he drew a crowd of 90 to the meeting. When he spoke last month the chamber had only a crowd of 54. Others say he has the same speech each time. Lots of people felt he made a mistake running all over the state in his challenge to Gov. Eliot Spitzer. While he was off to Buffalo and Albany, Nassau's government was almost paralyzed in the battle between Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature.
