The Saint Aidan's eighth grade girl's team won the first ever CYO Nassau-Suffolk Soccer Championship held in Malverne on Nov. 18. In an epic battle, Saint Aidan's prevailed over a very skilled Our Lady of Lourdes (Malverne) team.
Our Lady of Lourdes was able to strike first, scoring the only goal of the first half. Saint Aidan's was able to counter, immediately scoring on the first play of the second half, tying the game. Both teams battled through the entire game and subsequent overtime period.
With the score tied, the game would ultimately be decided in a best of five shoot out. Saint Aidan's won, outscoring Lourdes 2-1 in a thrilling, pressure packed finish. "You will be hard pressed to find a more exciting game," said Saint Aidan's head coach Dennis Gannon. "Both teams played exceptionally well."
Assistant coach Mike Fey put it best. "Everyone on that field today was a winner," he said.
