The defending champion Major Division girls softball team capped an undefeated 2007 season by winning their second consecutive league championship, defeating the Merillon Diamonds by a score of 13-3.

The Mineola girls were in fine form as they have been since opening night led by the sensational pitching of Victoria Goldbach, Melissa Mastoridis and Caitlin Kennedy. Caitlin struck out the final batter of the game to set off the celebration on the mound.

The girls jumped out to an early lead as Taylor Lubrano, Alyssa Paolicelli, Katie Pietrowski and Rachel Montanez continued to swing hot bats. Nicole Henricks and Amanda Fucci scored early runs with aggressive base running to add to the lead.

Tiffany Klein and Vanessa Richards each turned in fine defensive plays to keep Merillon from closing the gap while Jessica Monaco held any potential base stealers at bay by gunning down the first runner who made the mistake of attempting to steal.

Coaches Tom Kennedy, Artie Lubrano and Jay Monaco agree that the championship is the perfect reward for all the hard work put in by the girls who began work outs way back in January. The girls' determination, sportsmanship and effort should be an example to all athletes in Mineola. Winning is easy when you play hard.

Congratulations girls!
