The New York State Education Department released the results of the state standardized test scores and the Mineola School District has shown some improvement in the middle school grades.
According to Mineola School District Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Sherri Goffman, the district did see improvement in the middle school grades and the math scores in the elementary school levels were stable.
In the sixth grade, the district incorporated a double math period. Grades 5-8 also saw new math programs. In grades kindergarten through fourth grade, teachers in the Jackson Avenue School and Meadow Drive Schools implemented a new math program while the Hampton Street School and Cross Street School will implement the new program during the 2007-2008 school year.
Grades five and six in Mineola implemented the "Everyday Mathematics" curriculum and grades seven and eight ordered a mathematics program published by Glencoe. "In all accounts, we definitely think there was much more attention placed in math instruction," said Goffman, who gave credit to Mineola Middle School math instructional leader Ian Dunst for taking an active role in organizing the math program for the middle school.
In 2005-2006, 78 percent of Mineola sixth grade students met or exceeded state standards in mathematics while 85.1 percent met or exceeded state standards in 2006-2007. Last year, 68 percent of seventh grade students met or exceeded state standards in mathematics last year while 82.5 met or exceeded them this year. Last year, 77 percent of eighth grade students met or exceeded state standards in mathematics last year while 80.8 met or exceeded them this year.
The Cross Street School did well on their scores achieving greater than the county average in grades four and five while the Meadow Drive School also did well, achieving greater than the county average in third, fourth and fifth grades. The Jackson Avenue School fell below the county average in third and fourth grades and the Hampton Street School fell below the county average in third, fourth and fifth grades.
Here is how Mineola fared in this year's state mathematics assessments:
Students fall into one of four levels:
• Level I - Shows serious academic problems
• Level II - Partially meets the learning standards or meets part of the learning standards
• Level III - Meets the learning standards
• Level IV - Exceeds the learning standards
• Level III, IV - Meets or exceeds learning standards
