Lindy flew the Spirit of St. Louis from Mineola in1927. Glenn Curtis, Wall Post, Wiley Rogers and Amelia Earhart all made their early flights from our village. The first airmail drop in the United States was here. Mineola needs a history museum and the man trying to bring that about is Wally Hobbs. Walter is a member of the library board and the past president of the University Club. If any guy can make this a reality, it's my old NYU classmate Walter Hobbs.

That new "Kiss the Chef" is doing a pretty good business in the east end. They could do even better if the village would do some repair of the bumps, ruts and potholes on Hudson Street.

Speaking of that church, the pastor, Rev. James Bowman, recently used St. Thomas More as the subject of his homily. When Henry VIII wanted to divorce Catherine to marry the young and beautiful Anne, he tried to force Thomas More, the head of the Catholic Church in England, to approve the marriage. When More refused again and again in spite of bribes and threats, Henry had Thomas More beheaded. Father Bowman used this as an example of standing up for what you believe in.

Mineola Bicycle opened in 1935 in a little store at the corner of Mineola Boulevard and Jericho Turnpike. The place was so small that the owners, Ben and Seymour Rosman, use to carry their bikes outside to have some room in the shop. Each night they carried the bikes back into the shop again. It seemed that they had little chance to succeed with big and well-established Nassau Bicycle right around the corner. They moved to the big place they have now on Jericho and Beebe in 1958. The owner, Audrey, daughter of Seymour, today has one of the biggest bike shops on L.I., with leading lines like Toro, Lawnboy and Snapper.
