When the 2007 schedule was provided to second year Mineola High School girls softball team head coach Gerard Armengau, he looked forward to the team's competitive schedule. Scrimmages against the second and sixth ranked teams in Nassau County from Long Beach and West Hempstead were followed by non-league games against top ranked Seaford as well as Hicksville and Mepham. If nothing else, the Lady Mustangs will be battle tested when the Conference IV season takes hold in mid-April. The girls will seek to improve on last year's disappointment, as the new conference alignment should provide a better competitive balance.
Returning All-Conference senior Nicole Reardon will be the glue that holds Mineola together. Junior Maureen Metzner will be the ace of the pitching staff and will provide youthful exuberance alongside last year's most improved player, junior Alyssa Palma. Senior Erika Privat and junior Regina LaCourte will be counted on for key contributions to keep the team near the top of the conference.
Armengau, with assistant coach Mike Boccuzza, understands that a young group needs guidance. The two coaches are prepared to provide a better understanding on how the game is played in order to achieve a respectable record. If the girls can show gradual improvement as the season moves along then a shot at the playoffs is in the offing. Obviously, the tough start will be a learning process that can be used to spur the team in the critical stretches of the season
The Lady Mustangs will complete a home-and-home series against conference foes from Lynbrook, Cold Spring Harbor, Valley Stream South and New Hyde Park. Home games will be played at the Cross Street School. Armengau will return as the co-head coach of the Exception Senior Game for the second year as a respected member of the Long Island softball community. With this background, coach Armengau is keenly aware of the tools necessary to point the Lady Mustangs in the right direction.
