The mayors of three villages were among the 450 people who attended the "Taste of Mineola" at the Jericho Terrace, sponsored by the Mineola Chamber of Commerce: Mayor Jack Martins and his wife Paula, Williston Mayor Lud Odierna and Mayor Nancy Zollezi of East Williston. Others that we had a chance to talk to were Ruth Kazdan; John DaVanzo; Sally and Charles Patterson; Rita Bartscherer; Martha and Paul Becker; Mary Fitton; Dara and Jon Perlow; Bernadette Vaskas; Vito Giuseppe and Angela Mossa; Domenic Scalera; Charles Sleefe; Carol Tuzzolo; Gus Anzalone; Edward Hajduk; Jerry Mehlman; Dorothy Campbell; Bill and Layne Greene; Ray Sikorski; Bob Rosenthal; John and Carolina Macedo; John, Paula and Sara Herling; Gabe Parajos; Frank and Lisa Lao; Betty Vazquez; Manny Carvalho; Harry and Camille Zapiti; Christy Lavelle; Maura Clancy; Ed Escobar, the principal of Mineola High School; Lawrence Jones; Larry Werther; Eileen and Andy Murphy; Leah Cappadona; Ken Solosky; and Dora and Dick Dimler. The presence of "Mr. Met" and long ago Met player Art Shamsky helped make the evening a great success. The "Taste" two years ago drew 250; this year's figure is almost double.

Congratulations to Martins, Werther and DaVanzo on their landslide election victory. Linda Fairgrieve and Peggy May fought hard but for them it was not to be.

One good thing about being an old guy in a young neighborhood is that during the recent ice storm the young lads came over and shoveled me out. I thank Gavin Duffy, Tim Denzler, John Fucci and once again, Sean Burke - a great bunch of guys.

Calvin Singletary works the night shuttle bus at the Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI). Instead of just driving in silence or listening to the radio or talking on his cell phone he talks to his passengers. He tells them of all the free services available for them at BWI and he adds a few jokes and makes the ride a cheery experience. Our daughter Sister Annmarie was very impressed by this man who takes pride in his work and tries to make the world a little better place. Other nuns who have ridden his shuttle have also noted that he leaves people with a good feeling.
