The Wheatley School's Varsity Boys Basketball team has been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for academic excellence. The Scholar/Athlete Recognition Award Program, which was initiated by NYPHSAA 16 years ago, recognizes athletic teams from across New York State for the exemplary academic performance of its team members. Based upon a composite of the grade point averages among team members, team champions are selected for each varsity sport from those high schools entering the competition.
The team achieved an average of 96.32, which was the highest boys' basketball academic average in New York State. For this significant achievement the team has been declared New York State Champions for the Scholar Athlete Team Recognition Award competition. This is the second time The Wheatley School boys basketball team has achieved this honor. The team was declared New York State Champion for the 2002-2003 season.
In addition to the team's academic performance, the team enjoyed a successful and gratifying season. The team displayed a gritty determination during the regular season and worked hard to achieve its goal of qualifying for the playoffs. They were rewarded with a third seed and played almost flawlessly in a first-round victory over Locust Valley.
The Wheatley School is proud of the recognition the team members have earned and offers its congratulations to Coach Jim Curcio, who entered his team in the scholar/athlete competition and the members of the Wheatley Varsity Boys Basketball team.
