Suozzi Delivers State of the County Address
Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi delivered his sixth state-of-the-county address Tuesday evening, March 13. Among some of the topics Suozzi deemed important was the consolidation of government and the need to expand the tax base in the county.
Comptroller's Audit Says School District Spending Questionable
The New York State Comptroller's audit of the Mineola School District said that in a year's period from July 2004 to June 2005 and in some instances prior to 2004, the district had not controlled or properly documented how taxpayers' money was being spent or ensured that the district was getting the most for its money when purchasing goods and services. However, the district says the comptroller's report mischaracterizes much of what has taken place and fails to recognize current practices initiated to ensure district finances.
Wheatley Receives State Honors
The Wheatley School's Varsity Boys Basketball team has been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for academic excellence. The Scholar/Athlete Recognition Award Program, which was initiated by NYPHSAA 16 years ago, recognizes athletic teams from across New York State for the exemplary academic performance of its team members. Based upon a composite of the grade point averages among team members, team champions are selected for each varsity sport from those high schools entering the competition.
