Opinion

(In last week's issue, the following was inadvertently cut from a letter submitted to the editor. It is being printed at the author's request. It concerns an initiative by Trustee Linda Fairgrieve nearly three years ago to divide the village legal services from the duties handled by village attorney John Spellman. The motion was eventually withdrawn.)

When voting in the upcoming election on March 20, Mineola residents must remember how things were when the Hometown Party had what they deemed was the "legislative majority." The three trustees including Linda Fairgrieve and Paul Cusato plotted and tried to eliminate the services of John Spellman's law office as our village attorney.

Mayor Martins had only recently appointed a legal task force to look into the costs of the legal services provided to the Village. The task force, chaired by Judge Richard O'Callahan, concluded that not only was the village getting exceptional legal service from Mr. Spellman and his firm, but that the Village taxpayers were saving money having Mr. Spellman as the village attorney.
