Mineola varsity boys bowling coach Helms Bohringer had reasonable aspirations for the 2006-2007 season. Improving on a fifth place conference finish and possible plotting his fourth county playoff push in six seasons at the helm would generate a successful campaign. Senior Joe Calvao would once again be the catalyst while fellow classmates Bryan O'Malley and Paul Tapias would attempt to capture awards. Little did Bohringer know just how close his team would come to fulfilling these goals.
In the season opener against favored Sewanhaka at Sheridan Lanes, the Mustangs fell two pins shy of springing the upset. Future matches against runner-up Carle Place were even more frustrating. A mid-season tie with their closest rivals to the east was decided on a Calvao strike after losing the middle game by a pair of woods. In the rematch that would serve as the season finale, the Frogs leapt over the Mustangs by a mere six pins. While the final record showed 5-6-1, 10 pins prevented an 8-4 record that could have been good enough for the post-season. Regardless, the Mustangs put up a valiant effort against strong competition.
Calvao finished the season with an average of 195 and a high game of 259 while attempting to match strikes with the county's best bowler from Sewanhaka, Josh Roca (who tossed a pair of perfect games this season). Calvao was also recognized as an All-League performer for the second consecutive year. O'Malley and freshman Carmine Delligatti threw high games in excess of 224 and averaged above 160 alongside Tapias. Freshman Bryan Lopes provides hope, in tandem with Delligatti, that the incoming class can try and fill the shoes of four graduating seniors.
