The Village of Mineola buried a time capsule on January 24, 2007 to commemorate the village's 100th anniversary. The capsule contained items from the different organizations in the village. The capsule was buried near the Mineola Library and will be dug up in 25 years. Among the items that went into the capsule was the Mineola Police Task Force Operational Report. It will be known in 25 years from now that the village residents had the opportunity to decide through a democratic process whether their village should have its own police department.
Pictured at the time capsule burial are Mayor Jack M. Martins, Deputy Mayor Larry Werther, Trustee Linda Fairgrieve, Trustee and Centennial Committee Chairperson John DaVanzo, County Clerk Maureen O'Connell, Dorothy Campbell, Joyce Gorycki, Karen Gorycki, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Larry Licopoli, Centennial Committee Chairperson Bob Hinck, Mineola Chamber of Commerce President Steve Ford, Lou Sanders, Carl Marchese, Gabe Parajos and other residents.

It's appropriate, though, that the police task force report was buried underground since it signifies that the issue of whether the village should have its own police force ended on Dec. 5 when residents overwhelmingly decided against the idea.

With a heated race for mayor coming up between incumbent Jack Martins and challenger Linda Fairgrieve, the police department issue should not be a factor since residents have clearly spoken. Since then, the board has united in its quest for a neighborhood watch program, an initiative Trustee Paul Cusato has taken the lead in. The board also is united in an initiative to lobby the county for more police coverage although such an effort could prove futile.

Among the issues that should receive attention during the campaign are the ever increasing tax burden, the further development of Mineola's master plan and an MTA proposal to install a third track through Mineola.
