The Corpus Christi 7th grade boys (5-1) took on Our Lady of Peace (5-1) in a match-up of first place teams at Corpus Christi. It was a see-saw battle the entire game with Our Lady of Peace (OLP) coming out victorious with a buzzer beater 43-42.
The Lions from the beginning rebounded well, defended real well and moved the ball as they have all season. The open looks were there and they had a tough time burying them. It was very physical from the outset and the coaches were quite proud of the tenacious effort that was put forth.
It was a very uncharacteristic fourth quarter for the Lions as passes seem to miss their targets by the littlest of margins. When it comes down to the end of the game this season, the one thing Corpus Christi has been able to rely on has been its well above average foul shooting, and even that seemed to have abandoned them for whatever reason. All in attendance were quite proud of the boys, no matter the outcome as they played OLP very tough and OLP is a very good team.
The Lions were led in scoring by Tyler Kapela (14 points), Rick Cunha (8 points) and Christian Lird (6 points). The glass was being cleaned by Nick Goncalves (5 points, 8 rebounds), Pascal Poropat (4 points, 6 rebounds) and Matt Rudolph (5 points, 9 rebounds). Leading the charge on offense was Dylan Dekanchuk (5 assists) and numerous huge defensive stops and board work were the work of Justin Pilla. Numerous clean, bone-crushing screens and picks were the handiwork of Matt Sliwinski.
It was an extremely exciting game from beginning to end and the level of noise from the fans was ear-splitting. Adding to the excitement of the game were the Corpus Christi cheerleaders, under the direction of coordinators Diane Maher and Cheryl Monaco and coaches Christina and Gina, and the spirit they brought to Corpus Christi. They were quite boisterous and emotional all game long. They certainly go a long way toward giving Corpus Christi the home court advantage.
