On Saturday Jan.13, the seventh grade Lions from Corpus Christi took their 4-1 record and faced St. Frances of Wantagh in front of a packed house and with the Corpus Christi cheerleaders, under the direction of Diane Maher and Cheryl Monaco, present and very vocal.

Before the game began, the Lions knew they were in for a tough game as they would be without the services of backup point guard Dylan Dekanchuk. They knew St. Frances was a tough team since the two teams battled it out in a prior contest the Lions just pulled out in the end.

The Lions hustled and fought for every loose ball and rebound and all were very proud of their effort, but the boys felt like there was a lid on the basket and shots they were normally making weren't dropping for them. But they continued to work hard on defense and plug away on offense.

The Lions scoring was very evenly distributed with Matt Rudolph (10 points, 3 assists), Christian Lird (9 points, 4 assists), Nick Goncalves (7 points, 11 rebounds), Tyler Kapela (5 points, 3 huge assists), Justin Pilla (4 points, 5 rebounds), Pascal Poropat (3 points, 8 rebounds), Rick Cunha (1 point, 5 rebounds) and Matt Sliwinski (3 huge assists while playing solid defense).

The Lions came out victorious 39-26. The boys from Corpus take their 5-1 record and will play Our Lady of Peace (4-1) for possession of first place at Corpus Christi on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3:30 p.m. Then on Jan. 27, they will play against Notre Dame in New Hyde Park at 6 p.m. Come on down and root the boys on!
