Mineola's 100th Anniversary celebration came to a grand conclusion with the Centennial Ecumenical Service held at the Middle School. Representatives of the Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Jewish and Bahai faiths spoke. Among those we had a chance to talk to were Hilda Nagler, Joe McCarthy, Carl and Carole Marchese, Fred and Lenora Sweetapple, Kitty Kuske, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wolfe, John and Patricia Carroll, Albert Albro, Arthur and Joyce Albro, Patricia and John Maher, Margaret Fleming, Mike Vezzi, Don and Diane Hammond, Steve Congelosi, Joyce Gorycki, Robert Rosenthal, John Grillo, Frank and Fran Demaria, Sonny and Dorothy Mango, Al Thiem, Dick O'Callaghan, Tom McKevitt, Paula Martins, Scott and Linda Fairgrieve, Charlie Patterson, Andrew Petersen, Deacon Bob and Carol Nering, Paul and Martha Becker and Joe DiGiorgio. An impressive fireworks display followed the service. The display could be seen miles around, even to Garden City. Sally Peterson was in charge of the program.

My note about Ranger fan Maryann Ferron unable to buy two seats together for a game at the Garden, brought Larry and Trudy Young to the rescue. They own Young's Taxi and are season ticket holders. They gave Maryann two tickets together for her and her husband.

Julio and Maritza Cobos were at the Jericho Diner. I always felt a kinship with them, since they came from Peru. Our daughter, Sister Annmarie served five years in that country.

Rose Fiore of Wardwell Road spent 20 years as a saleswoman at Sterns and Gimbels. Remember them?

Lyde Newman of Jerome Avenue dined with her cousin, Vera Barrick, at the Davenport. Lyde's parents were Jim and Rita Newman, owners of Newman Funeral Home. Newman's was the forerunner of Cassidy's.

Jay Cor is the man who owns the paper store at Marcellus and Hillside Avenue. He is one of the few people I know who actually goes to the New Year's celebration in Times Square. Since Jay came from his native India, he goes every year. Better him than me.

Every time I go to Dr, Edward Gottlieb's office (he's a dentist) I get a kick ou of his picture of the Three Stooges working on teeth. The caption says they are "Drs. Yankham, Pullum and Payne."

The Nassau County Museum had a fine collection of art by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Georges Valmier, Juan Gris, Gertrude Stein and some unique drawings by Chuck Close. They also have a first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses.

Dolores Jose of Mineola has been a waitress at the Seacrest for 20 years.

A really fine French restaurant is Oliver Bon Dinant's at 82 Hillside Avenue, Williston Park. Tasty food, inexpensive, good service and some unusual dishes like quail and grouse. I particularly like their duck breast and excellent wines.

Margaret West has lived here just a year and likes Mineola a lot. She walks most every day from her apartment, the President, on Mineola Boulevard to Herricks Road and back.

Alice Wilkins was at our favorite diner. She has been a real estate saleswoman for 20 years.

John McDonnell, Marie Hollwedel and Anne Schnelke didn't win much in Atlantic City, but still had a grand time.

Eva and Gerod Roganish live on Dow Avenue. He is a retired collision technician and still works as a notary.

Tina Ceriello, daughter of Andy, owner of Ceriello's fine foods, was wed to Tim O'Leary at a Catholic Church in the city, January 13. They are honeymooning in Iceland, Brrr. I can feel the cold from here.
