The 7th grade boys from Corpus Christi took their 2-1 record on the road to Garden City to face the boys from St. Joseph's on Saturday Dec. 16.
It was a hard fought, tough battle but the Lions came out victorious against St. Joe's 56-41. The Lions knew they were in for a tough battle as one of their leaders and top scorers, Matt Rudolph, was playing with an injury to his shooting hand, which didn't allow him to get into his shooting zone. Although he had a difficult time on the offensive end, he still contributed in many other ways to the victory.
The Lions were led by Tyler Kapela with 21 points. Christian Lird (11 points) and Pascal Poropat (8 points) also made significant contributions. But the name of the game was defense, hitting the open man and controlling the glass. It was a very physical game but the boys showed again their versatility whether it's the physical or finesse game, they can and will compete.
The passing was crisp led by Dylan Dekanchuk and Matt Sliwinski and the glass was being cleaned by Justin Pilla, Nick Goncalves, Pascal Poropat and Rick Cunha.
The St. Joe's team knew every shot and rebound was going to be tough and not without a lion challenging them.
For the fourth game in a row the boys from Corpus Christi shot over 66 percent from the charity stripe, sinking 17 of 21 foul shots. For the season, they are shooting just under 75 percent, which is quite remarkable for a team of seventh graders. So far, they truly have been playing as a team, which has made the coaches and parents quite proud.
