Welcome Back to an American Hero
Members of the Mineola's volunteer organizations - the fire department, ambulance corps and auxiliary police - are some of the most dedicated residents in the village. One member of Mineola's bravest showed his dedication and courage half a world away. Matthew Doyle, a member of Engine Company #3 of the Mineola Fire Department, returned from Iraq to an overjoyed family and will now spend Christmas in his hometown of Mineola.

New York Islanders Rick DePietro, Arron Asham and Tom Poti have been enjoying successful seasons on the ice. Off the ice, they also are making contributions. On Wednesday, Dec. 13, the three Islanders visited Winthrop-University Hospital's Hagedorn Pediatric Impatient Center to spread holiday cheer.

Mineola Girls Basketball Looks To Surprise Young Team Has High Ceiling
Veteran girls basketball coach Denise Zunno has a tall order on her hands. With only two returning starters and a freshman point guard, the Lady Mustangs will no doubt be battling more experienced teams throughout the 2006-2007 season. Preaching teamwork and maintaining a high level of confidence will be keys to success. Zunno and assistant Katherine Hock will be perfect complements to a season with a solitary goal of becoming better by season's end than the group that took the floor in pre-season workouts.

Wheatley Soccer Coach and Players Receive State Recognition
While the memories of a dream season still burn bright, the Wheatley girls soccer team recently received more good news. After completing a season in which the team enjoyed unprecedented success by capturing its first-ever Long Island regional championship and advancing to the New York State championship game, our coach and two players have received state recognition. Coach Paul Paino received New York State Coach-of-the-Year honors, and two seniors, Ashley Kowalczyk and Stephanie Del mistro were named to the All-State soccer team. These honors were awarded by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS).
