Mineola's own police force? How would you vote if the referendum were held now, Yes? - No? Or, undecided? For the past two weeks, I have been polling the residents with this question. I called people from the Yellow Book. I talked to people in the library, in the diner, restaurants, people in church and people I met on the street. Some I knew, others were strangers, all lived in the village. I avoided questions of how I felt about the matter and I avoided any talk of whether it would cost more, less or be a wash. Just tell me how you would vote on what you know now. I talked to young people and old people, men and women. I polled 208 persons, 90 voted No, 68 voted Yes and 50 said they were undecided. Most seniors, but not all, seemed to be against it, most younger people, but by no means all, were for the idea. This does not mean that the Mineola police force will be voted down. If all the undecided voted "Yes" it would pass. It seems to indicate that the pro-police force people have a lot of convincing to do.

We were, of course, disappointed that the parade had to be postponed until Oct. 22. But it has been a great Centennial Year. That 200-page historical journal was wonderful. Our opening concert was a sellout. The fashion show was also a sellout. The religious service drew 250 people and the banners mounted on the telephone poles were all sold out. I know the parade will be a winner and the Centennial Ball tickets are going at a rapid rate. Good job by Bob Hinck, John DaVanzo, Candida Mala and the rest of the committee.

There are so many drunken driving accidents often leading to death, I thought it was a great idea to seize the cars of the drunks. Then that seizure was found to be illegal. There has to be some way around that law. It was a good way to get these people off the road.

I have to thank Newsday's Rhoda Amon for giving me a full-page write-up. That has resulted in me being called for a radio interview on Nov. 9. No, at 83 years old I'm not running for anything - Honest.
