This past Saturday, the Mineola School District held its annual homecoming parade. Since this is the centennial year of the Village of Mineola, the theme of the parade was Mineola's 100th birthday.
Along the parade route, the floats wishing Mineola a happy birthday were brightly colored and decorated and there was no shortage of school spirit. The marching band was in full force as were the cheerleaders and kickline and each of the schools in the district was represented. Bringing up the rear of the parade was the Mineola Fire Department and directing traffic was the Mineola Auxiliary Police.
At the Hampton Street Stadium, there was a ceremony before the game against Roosevelt. The ceremonial first ball was thrown by Mineola School District Director of Fine and Performing Arts Rob Ratner, who will be retiring this June.
The Mustangs were sporting their new uniforms, which are reminiscent of the Denver Broncos only, in the cast of the Mustangs, the colors of black, red and white.
Against Roosevelt, the Mustangs tried their best but let the game get out of hand in the second half.
The Roosevelt Rough Riders jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead before the Mustangs came back with two second quarter touchdowns. The first was a 5-yard run by senior quarterback Jon Hock with senior Mike Roo adding the extra point. Senior running back Chris Orlando ran in a score from the three yard-line. Roo added the extra point. However, the Rough Riders went on to score 34 unanswered points for the 47-14 win.
