Selecting a college and making career plans are two of the most important decisions to be made by high school students and their parents. The choices are not easy to make and the cost of a college education continues to rise. Guidance counselors, teachers, coaches and other school officials can provide valuable assistance to the families experiencing the college-selection process and a team effort, in which the needs of the student are the first priority, is the best approach. To assist Wheatley student-athletes and their parents in this process, a special program has been planned. The program, titled, "Guiding the College-bound Student-Athlete," will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Wheatley School at 7:30 p.m. While the program is intended to address the needs of sophomores, juniors and seniors, all Wheatley students and their parents are invited to attend this most informative program.

The program, which is sponsored by the Guidance Department and Athletic Department, will be hosted by Mark Kowalsky, a guidance counselor at the Wheatley School and the District Athletic Director, Fred Apgar. Topics that will be discussed include standardized testing, the preparation of student profiles and athletic resumés, NCAA Clearinghouse regulations and procedures, structure of collegiate athletics, college visits, communication with college coaches, college admission/search process and the recruitment process. A variety of resource materials will be distributed to assist students and parents in the college selection process.
