Police Commissioner James H. Lawrence encourages everyone to have a safe and happy Halloween and be mindful regarding the festivities associated with this holiday. Halloween brings about many children trick-or-treating in our communities. Parents and guardians should speak to their children on a variety of safety issues before they go out into their neighborhoods. Some of the safety concerns should focus on the following items:
• Make sure children's costumes are safe in regard to their fit, visibility, and are reflective for nighttime hours. It would ideal if the child carried a flashlight or glow stick.
• Younger children should go out during daylight hours, unless accompanied by a responsible adult.
• Older children who are able to go trick-or-treating in a group should be advised to plan a safe route with parents and set a specific time for their return home.
• Instruct children not to cut through back alleys or fields and stay in well-lighted areas.
• Instruct your child never to go into a home of a stranger or get into their car.
• On small children, place an emergency tag discreetly inside their clothing in case they become separated from the group.
• Eat only those treats that are securely factory-sealed and only after an adult has examined it.
• Discuss with your child the difference between tricks and vandalism.
The Nassau County Police Department will also be utilizing marked and unmarked patrol vehicles to deter malicious property damage and other potential unlawful incidents. Motorists should also be cognizant of the increased pedestrian traffic and operate their vehicles accordingly.
