The Wheatley School has been recognized by the Section 8 Public High School Athletic Association for its display of exemplary sportsmanship during the 2005-2006 school year. The Nassau County Sportsmanship Award Program was established seven years ago to encourage school districts to promote good sportsmanship and to recognize those athletic programs that reflect the qualities of good sportsmanship as measured by the collective behavior of athletes, coaches and spectators.
At the completion of each sports season, the Officials' Association for each varsity sport assesses and ranks each participating school for displays of good sportsmanship. These rankings are compiled for all sports to determine those athletic programs in Nassau County that exhibit positive displays of good sportsmanship on a consistent basis. Ten Nassau County public school districts received recognition in this prestigious program. Farmingdale High School was the overall winner and Cold Spring Harbor and Massapequa were the first and second runners-up respectively. The Wheatley School was one of seven other districts that was recognized as a "Top 10 Award Winner,"
The Nassau County Sportsmanship Award Program is sponsored by Cablevision Local Programming and it is administered by four highly regarded and respected retired Nassau County administrators - Ray Buckley, Bernie O'Brien, Bill Vita and Don Snyder. The Wheatley Athletic Department is proud to have received this recognition and is grateful to those coaches, athletes and spectators who have conducted themselves in a spirit of good sportsmanship and kept the purpose of sports in its proper perspective.
