The Village of Mineola held a ceremony on September 11 at 7 p.m. to honor those who lost their lives and the heroism of rescue workers in Mineola's Memorial Park. Village officials, members of the clergy, community members and members of Mineola's veterans organizations, the American Legion Memorial Post #349 and VFW Private Adolph Block #1305 gathered around the 9/11 monument to remember the victims of the horrific terrorist attacks.
Members of the clergy who spoke included Rev. James Williams of Chaminade High School, who gave the invocation, Rabbi Anchel Perl of Congregation Beth Shalom, who gave the closing prayer, Pastor Henry Shriever of Lutheran Church of Our Savior and Pastor Chet Easton of First Presbyterian Church, who also led the singing of God Bless America. Rev. Christina van Liew of Church of the Nativity/St. Andrews Church and Father James Bowman of Corpus Christi Church could not attend the ceremony due to parish 9/11 conflicts.
Mayor Jack Martins and the village board of Deputy Mayor Larry Werther, Trustee Linda Fairgrieve, Trustee Paul Cusato and Trustee John DaVanzo attended the ceremony.
John Paul Macedo, a member of the Mineola Junior Fire Department, played Taps on the bugle and Denis Clark, also a member of the juniors and a sophomore at Holy Trinity High School, played the bagpipes.
It was a solemn ceremony and important since its shows that the victims of 9/11 will never be forgotten.
