Community members who are interested volunteering for the Mineola School District's three school/community committees are asked to send a letter of interest along with a resume to Dr. Lorenzo Licopoli, superintendent of schools, 121 Jackson Avenue, Mineola 11501 or by email to llicopoli@mineola.k12.ny.us by Aug. 25.
The three school/community committees seeking volunteers are the Capital Planning Committee, the Communications Committee and the Financial Planning Committee.
The roles of the Capital Planning Committee are to update the 2005-2006 five-year capital plan to a 2006-2011 capital plan and make a report to the board of education by January 2007.
The roles of the Communications Committee are to advise the board/administration on presentations of district documents, develop liasons for community organizations, increase publicity with local newspapers, organize community displays of district information and make a report to the board of education by May 2007.
The roles of the Financial Planning Committee are to review budget documents, critique budget proposals and review the five-year financial plan.
Each year, the board of education allocates $500,000 in the budget for capital improvements so that the maintenance and upkeep of the school's facilities is maintained. At Thursday night's board of education meeting, the board approved the expenditure of the $500,000 that was in the 2006-2007 budget as follows:

At a July 31 special meeting of the board of education, the board hired George Maurer as the new assistant principal of Mineola High School at a salary of $127,603 in accordance with the contract agreement with the Mineola Board of Education and the Association of Mineola School Administrators. Maurer was the Social Studies Instructional Leader at the middle school.
