Julia O'Brien, 85, a longtime resident of Mineola, passed peacefully in her sleep on July 26, 2006. She had been dealing bravely with diabetes for the past 35 years, never complaining and always looking toward the future. For the past seven years she was on dialysis and refused to let the inconvenience interfere with her work at the Corpus Christi Rectory, where she was the head chef for the past 30+ years. Frequently, she would come home, feed her family, go to dialysis and then head for the church to be sure the clergy was well taken care of. Her favorite times were the holidays when she was able to plan elaborate meals for their annual Christmas party. Her cookies were awesome! She was a repeat Blue Ribbon winner at the renowned Mineola Fair for her baking and she was especially noted for her hot cinnamon buns.
Julia and her husband John lived in Mineola since 1945 and raised their three daughters, Julia, Patricia and Maureen, who all attended Corpus Christi Elementary School. Her proudest and greatest accomplishment was her family. She created a family unit of love, support and closeness that one could only aspire to come close to.
Julia and John were a team that ran and operated a successful janitorial service for over 40 years. Julia practiced her love of cooking and people by working at Klingerman's Bakery, Mineola, for many years. She also became a part-time cook at the Corpus Christi Rectory and soon became their head chef after she retired from the bakery. In addition, Julia was involved with many local craft groups such as quilting, afghan making and cake decorating. Julia left her mark on everyone she touched. She was always loving, supportive, fair and above all extremely practical. Whatever problem was brought to her for her opinion, her response was to cut to the chase, deal immediately with the "real problem" to which she always knew the best and simplest solution. She was not someone to suffer foolishness nor did she ever complain or want to hear others doing it when they could be dealing with the challenge, whatever it was, instead.
Julia spent the last two years of her life at Mease Manor Assisted Living in Dunedin, FL. Up until that point she continued to work at the Rectory, always concerned with the welfare of her beloved priests.
At Mease Manor, Julia developed a very painful spinal stenosis. However bad she felt, she always insisted on trying to walk and keep independent. At one time, an administrator asked her in wonderment if she ever felt like just giving up. Her response was "Why? What's my alternative?"
Julia is survived by her daughter Julie Morio of Spring Hill, FL, her husband Ralph, their two children, Sgt. John Morio, US Army, Iraq, Annapolis graduate, Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Morio, USN and his wife Lisa of Fredericksburg, VA, daughter Patricia Crespo of Huntington Station and her son Christian; daughter Maureen Wagner and her husband Bruce of Howell, NJ; and her two stepchildren, Donald Wagner and Cindy Andersen. Great-grandchildren include LCpl Sean A. Morio, USMC, Natasah Morio, Jessica and Danielle Morio, Amy Jo Freemen, Bryan Anderson, Victoria and Patrick Wagner.
Julia always felt her life a celebration and as such, the family will hold a memorial service in her honor on Aug. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cassidy Funeral Home, 156 Willis Ave., Mineola. A Funeral Mass will be held on Aug. 19 at 9:45 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Winthrop-University Hospital Diabetes Education Center, 259 First St., Mineola, NY 11501.
