The Nassau Chromium "Bombers" boys 9-10-year-old baseball team recently finished the Spring League by winning both the regular season Divisional Championship and Playoff Championship as well. The boys finished the season with an impressive 8-2-1 record to take the Division title and the # 1 seed heading into the playoffs. However the playoffs started in a shaky fashion. In the opener of the double-elimination format tournament the boys lost a heartbreaker 8-7 to Keith Gessner's K's Auto Repair, which relegated the Bombers to the loser's bracket.
The Bombers then faced the daunting task of having to win 5 straight games to win the Championship and did exactly that. The last 2 games were without a doubt the most exciting of the season. In rematches with K's Auto Repair the Bombers prevailed 13-12 and 5-4 respectively in unbelievable games that had fans, players, coaches and managers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
In the deciding games the Bombers prevailed with stellar and consistent pitching from Matthew Prochner , Bobby Lenney and Sean Sweeney. Their attack was also led by some timely hitting from Patrick Lynch, Dean Almanzar and Matthew Eisen. Holding down the fort on the defensive end with some great fielding was Matthew Ines, David Fisher, Tommy Lenney, Michael Harrington, Michael Giamo and Connor Smith.
Giamo was the hero of the final game with an outstanding catch with 2 outs in the top of the sixth inning (with the tying and go ahead runners on base) to preserve the win. After making the catch Michael was mobbed by his teammates out in right field with a wild celebration which was finished off with the awards presentation and a pizza party afterwards.
At this time Manager John Sweeney , coaches Chris Prochner, Joel Fisher and the rest of the team would like to thank all the teams in the Minors group for a great competitive season.
Congratulations to the Bombers.
