The Mineola High School girls varsity lacrosse team continued its wonderful season by rolling to a 16-4 victory over Cold Spring Harbor in the quarterfinals of the Nassau County Class-C playoffs. The Mustangs (15-2) were led by senior Allie Kain (Siena-bound), who scored six goals, four of which came in the opening half. Senior Casey Hughes (Iona-bound) scored four goals, while junior Katie Carter added three goals and three assists. Mineola was to face top-seeded North Shore in the Class-C semifinal on Saturday, May 20.
Frank Massaro is the head coach of this Mineola machine. Each day, he leaves practice with the hope his players will discuss what occurred at that practice. The coach's hope is realistic since half of his starting lineup shares common dinner tables. The team has three sets of sisters in the lineup.
Alyssa (Sr.) and Emily (Fr.) Glenn anchor the low defense together for Mineola. Their years together are evident on the field. Emily and Alyssa effortlessly slide to support each other on defense. When the team moves to attack, Alyssa and Emily check with each other for adjustments that need to be made.
Moving up to midfield, opposing teams are always doing double takes as they encounter identical twin sisters Kristin and Lauren Mobyed. These juniors take their bond to a new level on the field. Whether on attack or defense, each is eerily aware of the other and their play off each other appears to be effortless.
Finishing off the attack, you find another pair of siblings. Allie (Sr.) and Emily (Fr.) Kain are another of the dynamic duo for the Lady Mustangs. Emily at low offense is one of the primary feeders. To no one's surprise, one of her favorite targets is her sister, Allie.
Coach Massaro is hoping those dinner table conversations take the Mustangs deep into the playoffs.
