The Mineola PAL 5th and 6th grade Chiefs dominated Freeport, winning 7-3. The Mineola Chiefs completely controlled the face-offs, which enabled them to control the game. Both Brian Gaffney and Brian Ehrhardt went a combined 10-0 on face-offs. Sparked by a strong defense, the Chiefs forced several shotless possessions. The saves made by Tevin Carlo (7 saves) and Nick Miller (8 saves) helped the Chiefs win their second game of the year.
Mineola scored on the opening face-offs. Brian Gaffney won the face-off and then passed the ball to Brian Ehrhardt, who put the ball behind the Freeport goalie. After Freeport scored two quick goals to make the game 2-1, Mineola came right back as Gaffney again fed the ball to Ehrhardt, who again put it into the net to tie the game. From then on, Mineola took over the game by scoring four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 halftime lead.
Midfielders Joe Murray (6 groundballs), Jeff Demehy (3 groundballs) and Brent Weissman (6 groundballs) all had assists on the goals scored by Brian Gaffney (15 groundballs), Brian Ehrhardt (7 groundballs) and John DeMarco, who has his first goal of the year. Middies Tevin Carlo (3 groundballs), David Orent (4 groundballs) and Greg Maisch also played a big part offensively as they constantly put pressure on the Freeport defense.
Defensively, the Chiefs were led by the combination of Bobby Dwyer (4 groundballs), Matt DePalma (2 groundballs), Chris Shanahan (3 groundballs), Nick O'Connor and Kevin Woehling. These five players forced Freeport into making several shotless possessions, which allowed the Mineola offense to take over the game. Also playing well were attackmen Ray Baiewalter, Anthony Nicolosi, Nick Miller (4 groundballs) and Glen Peters.
Overall, the Chiefs had a very successful second win over Freeport. Coach Redmond, coach Miller and coach McGann were pleased with the win and team effort.
