In their 2006 season home opener, the Mineola PAL Chiefs third grade boys lacrosse team beat the Manhasset Indians 4-2 in front of a crowd off over a 100 screaming fans at Hampton Stadium. The team is coached by a father-son tandem of Mark Parendo and Keith Parendo.
Offensively in the first half it was Mineola's attackmen Chris Lockwood and Steven Gessner with unassisted goals to take the 2-0 early lead, but Manhasset battled back with two scores of their own for the 2-2 tie at halftime. In the second half the Chiefs' defense was all over the place causing havoc, led by Gavin Dowd and Jake Connors. Goalie John Clancy was unconscious in front of the cage blocking balls with his head and body while making saves. The Chiefs battled the Indians for every ground ball.
Late in the third quarter, the Chiefs midfielder Thomas O'Connell picked up a ground ball and ran down the right sideline making a 25-yard pass to Michael Patalano in front of the goal. Patalano put the ball in the back of the net for the 3-2 lead. The chiefs never looked back. Late in the fourth quarter an unassisted goal by Brian Smith sealed the game and the victory.
The entire Mineola third grade team and coaching staff showed outstanding character and sportsmanship. All the boys played and participated in the victory, which was the first lacrosse win of their careers. Other players that contributed in the victory was Andrew Cunningham, Ryan Eccher, James Gerstner, Chris Asam, Michael Elefonte, Dominic Paggi, Thomas Bonziglia, Zach Chorost, Jacob Correia, Matt Demelas, Jack Dennehy, Brandon Durham, David Lopes and Robert Luca.
