The Mineola High School girls winter track and field team took fourth place in the Nassau County Championships. While many athletes earned All-County honors, only one won a county championship. Justine Boeshore was awarded the championship plaque in the pole vault. The junior also earned All-County honors. Senior Lauren Massa also earned All-County honors in the 1,500-meter race/walk.
"Despite being injured for the majority of the season, Lauren broke her own personal and school record in the walk," said coach Kristin Degnan.
Massa's previous record of 8:46.6 was set at last year's county championships. This year, she finished in third place and improved her mark to 8:37.8.
The girls' 4X800 relay team also attained All-County honors. Alia Fater, Lauren Mobyed, Julia Yan and Kristin Mobyed finished second in the relay and set a school record with a time of 10:17.6, which eclipsed their old mark of 10:21.3. Lauren Mobyed also set a school record in the 3,000-meters. She shaved 14 seconds off the old mark with a time of 11:09.2. Lauren finished fourth in the county championships and earned a medal. Twin sister Kristin finished fourth in the 600-meters with a time of 1:44.1 and earned a medal as well.
The 4X400 relay team also earned a fourth place medal. Veterans Jenn Pawlowski and Jen Port paired with rookies Maureen Metzner and Julie Novak to earn the medals.
The 4X200 relay team ran the second fastest time in school history and placed sixth overall in the county meet. Veterans Kasey Hughes, Allie Kain and Katie Carter teamed up with freshman phenom Josephine Manzella for the great performance.
Following the county championships, two Mustangs competed at the State Qualifier meet. Lauren Massa set another school record in the 1,500-meter race/walk. Four days after setting the school standard at 8:37.8 in the County Meet, Lauren broke it by five seconds in the State Qualifier with a time of 8:32.8. Coach Degnan says, "Lauren's accomplishments this season are extraordinary considering she was hindered by a hip injury. The race/walk is a very technical event that puts strain on your hips and Lauren took her challenges head on."
Lauren Mobyed also ran in the State Qualifier. She competed in the 3,000-meters and ran 11:30.1. "Congratulations to these young ladies for making it to the final meet of the season and competing with their hearts and determination," said coach Degnan.
