On Feb. 28 the residents of Mineola will be voting on the Bond Referendum. The funds proposed in the bond referendum will pay for "absolutely necessary" repairs and renovations to the various schools in the district.
Some of us in the community will vote "no" on the bond issue and any future budget proposals. Many feel they have already "paid their dues." They no longer feel a responsibility to the needs of our schools. They are angry and outraged about the recent corruption that has been uncovered in some school districts. Funds slated to be used for the welfare of the students have, at times, fallen into the hands of thieves, who are so greedy that child's welfare and future means nothing.
I would like to share a personal story with you. My son is a gifted boy who has been recently accepted recently to Chaminade High School. After long and careful consideration, he chose to go on to Mineola High School. My wife and I supported his decision 100 percent. My son has received an outstanding education while attending Mineola schools. He has repeatedly had great teachers and coaches. He has excelled in all of his studies, including honors and regents classes. He is becoming an outstanding violinist. He has participated in two outstanding plays while at Mineola Middle School. He also had a fine seventh-grade debut on the baseball diamond. My son has become a responsible, caring and respectful young man. For these reasons, I am grateful to the Mineola school system.
There are many other children like my so coming up through the ranks of the Mineola school system. It is on their behalf that I hope you will continue to make sacrifices for the good of the children. By giving the schools what they need, we are essentially investing in the future of this great country.
We are presently in an uncertain war in Iraq. We are prone to terrorist bombs and the price of oil is rising daily. These are a few of a host of many other disturbing and dangerous issues we are currently faced with. Does anyone feel safe or content with the way things are going in the world? In just a few short years, this whole big mess will fall into the laps of our children. It will be people like my son and others who will have to face the dangers and make the decisions. Will they be prepared? Can they bail us out? Can they instill peace? Will they be okay?
I will do everything I can for our schools. It is schools like Mineola that, when given the tools, will mold our children into fine young men and women, who can ensure a bright, peaceful and productive future for all of us.
