The Mineola High School girls varsity bowling team rolled to a 9-3 regular season record. The Lady Mustangs finished in second place in their conference behind only Nassau County's top-ranked team, Sewanhaka.
Mineola wrestled away second place from a higher-ranked Carle Place squad by beating the frogs in their final two matches. Danielle Riveral was ranked 12th in the county with a 189.5 average and attained All-County honors. Kelly Munson and Desiree Perez received All-County recognition. Stephanie Badger, Melissa Fusco and Brooke Salvatore also made significant contributions to the team.
The Mustangs were to compete in the county tournament on Saturday, Feb. 4. Rivera will also compete for the second time in the individual county tournament on Feb. 11 at Garden City Lanes. Rivera bowled a high game in conference play (246) as well as the third highest series (583). "This is quite an accomplishment considering top-ranked Sewanhaka has three bowlers ranked higher than Danielle," said coach Valerie Liese.
The Mineola boys varsity bowling team took fourth place in its conference. The Mustangs finished strong by winner their final two matches over Oyster Bay and Locust Valley. In match play, Mineola had a record of 5-7. Award winners were seniors John Carnabucci (183 average) and Matt Ponte (170 average) and junior Joe Calvao (178 average).
Coach Helms Bohringer pointed to seniors Matt Vuolo and Brian Ciuffo and junior Pat Tapias as other bowlers who helped the Mustangs this season. One of the big highlights of the season was Carnabucci's shot at a perfect game, which fell short as he finished with a score of 276.
