Long Island Checker Cab was awarded six additional licenses to operate taxi cabs in Mineola, bringing the company's total to 15.

A hearing was held in November after Long Island Checker applied for 15 additional licenses. The subject of the hearing was whether Mineola needed additional taxi cabs to service the residents of the village. At the time, All Island had 35 licenses, Long Island Checker had nine and Young's Taxi had one.

At Wednesday's village board meeting, the board voted to give Long Island Checker six additional licenses. The company, which originally had one license, was granted eight additional approximately two years ago and thus now has 15.

Long Island Checker Cab owner Phil Fortuna explained to the board that the company needed additional licenses to better serve the village.
