Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell recently hosted an identity theft prevention seminar at the East Meadow Senior Center. Guest speakers from the Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County Consumer Affairs Division, East Meadow Post Office and Commerce Bank joined the assemblywoman to inform seniors about how to protect their identities and what to do if they become victims.
O'Connell cited official statistics that reveal nearly 10 million people each year fall victim to identity theft, costing consumers $5 billion in out-of-pocket losses and business owners $48 billion. Identity theft victims are often left with damaged credit reports that can take much time, effort and money to restore. This damage often makes it difficult for individuals to obtain loans, establish new lines of credit and cash checks, added O'Connell. Senior citizens are often prime targets.
O'Connell warned seniors that it is important for them to take precautions, such as protecting their mail, personal information and other data, to ensure they don't become victims of this burgeoning crime.
