The Mineola boys varsity soccer team earned itself a trip to the playoffs. The Mustangs finished with a record of 8-3-1, good for third place in Conference ABC-II. Westbury, with whom Mineola split its two games, finished first, while Roslyn was second.
Mineola took on Great Neck North on Saturday, Oct. 29 in the first round of the playoffs and came away with a victory, shutting out Great Neck North 4-0. Gustavo Dias contributed three goals and an assist for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs completed their regular season by defeating that same Great Neck North team 3-1 to gain some revenge for a Sept. 26 loss.
Girls Soccer Update
The Mineola girls varsity soccer team was forced to jam a number of games into the final days of the season because of all the postponements forced by the rainy weather in October.
The Lady Mustangs dropped a 3-2 decision to Valley Stream North. Then, Mineola was blanked by Mepham 2-0.
In one of their best games of the season, the Lady Mustangs played Carey to a 1-1 tie. Alyssa Blenn scored on a free kick from 24 yards out to forge the tie. Carey was the first place team in Conference VI at the time. Then, Mineola fell to Great Neck South 1-0. South ended up winning the conference title.
Girls Volleyball Update
The Mineola girls varsity volleyball team continued to negotiate its way through a tough schedule. The Lady Mustangs defeated Hicksville 25-17, 25-17 and 25-14. Kelly Munson led the way with 10 aces while Liz Campbell had 12 kills. Then, Mineola outlasted Plainview JFK in five games, winning the finale 25-17. Liz Campbell notched 17 kills while RoseAnne Mercurio added 11 kills. Mineola then fell at Seaford in five games. The Mustangs won the first two games before the Sailors came back to win the next three.
