As the season opened at the high school for the girl's junior varsity soccer team, little did anyone know that underneath the fresh scrubbed, wide eyed look of these typical freshman, beat the collective heart of a group of experienced, and savvy soccer players. Moving up en masse from the Middle School, this team now features thirteen freshmen, who join three sophomores, to create a team with much potential. Of the thirteen freshmen, no less than seven players possess both middle school and travel soccer experience.
Opening their season at home against Mepham High School, the Lady Mustangs defeated the Lady Pirates 1-0. Opening the game with a strong offensive presence in Mepham's defensive end, the Lady Mustangs were repeatedly turned back by Mepham's goalie who single-handedly kept the Lady Mustangs at bay in the first half. Not to be deterred, the Lady Mustangs finally broke through in the second half with the game's only goal scored by Maryann Sanderleaf on a pass from Melissa Pastoressa. The Lady Mustang defense, led by Emily Glenn, Emily Kain, Iliana Gauto, and Vicky Dos Santos, shut out the Lady Pirates with a smothering defense which limited goalie Samantha Morris to just a handful of easy saves.
Looking to build on their opening day win, the Lady Mustangs traveled to face the Lady Seahawks of Carey High School. With the weather hot and humid, the Lady Mustangs opened the game even hotter as Maryann Sanderleaf scored the game's first two goals in the first ten minutes of the game. From there, the Lady Mustangs never looked back as Mary Phelan would add two goals, Michelle Wenz one goal, and Maryann Sanderleaf, her third, in a 6-1 Lady Mustang win. Once again, the Lady Mustang defense held their opponents down, this time to a meaningless goal.
With their record at 2 wins and no losses, the Lady Mustangs came home to face the Lady Rebels of Great Neck South High School. Opening the game in a disoriented manner, the Lady Mustangs quickly found themselves behind 1-0 on an early Lady Rebel goal. However, Mary Phelan pulled the Lady Mustangs even with a goal, thirty three minutes into the first half. Opening the second half, Melissa Pastoressa put the Lady Mustangs ahead with her goal five minutes into the second half. Five minutes later, Mary Phelan scored her second goal of the game to give the Lady Mustangs a two goal cushion and a 3-1 win.
Looking to extend their winning streak to four games, the Lady Mustangs traveled to face the Lady Vikings of North Shore High School. Opening the game in overdrive, the Lady Mustangs put intense pressure on the Lady Viking defense. However, for all their effort, they could not capitalize on their opportunities as the first half ended in a scoreless tie. Opening the second half, the Lady Mustangs scored seven minutes into the half on a goal by Maryann Sanderleaf, assisted by Mary Phelan. Seemingly on cruise control, a clearing miscue by the Lady Mustang defense, with just 4 minutes left in the half, allowed the Lady Vikings to tie the score. Undaunted, the Lady Mustangs drove back down the field to retake the lead on Maryann Sanderleaf's second goal of the game, with just one minute left, and earn a 2-1 win.
