The Mineola Chamber of Commerce once again will sponsor the Mayor's State of the Village Address on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Mayor Jack Martins will address the local residents and businesses for the second year in a row at the Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola, at 6:30 pm. Some of the anticipated topics are the 100 year anniversary celebration, parking, the status of the study concerning an independent local police force, restaurant classification, the library, the forthcoming improvements on the properties which previously housed Koeppel Ford and Gensel's Furniture, and the advocacy issues he is representing Mineola on with the town and county.
Directly after the mayor gives his State of the Village aAddress, Mayor Martins will take questions at the regular chamber meeting at Piccola Bussola, 159 Jericho Turnpike. All village residents are welcome to attend the meeting and ask questions. Dinner is optional. The cost of dinner (a buffet) is $25.
Mayor Martins announced that the apartment building at 101 Jackson Avenue has been sold. Further details will be printed in an upcoming edition of the Mineola American.
The Commerce Bank that was built near the former location of Gensel's is scheduled to open Sept. 24. The developers haven't started to work on the gateway to Mineola beautification that was promised. The beautification would be located on the corner of Herricks Road and Jericho Turnpike.
While traveling around Mineola, you can notice that graffiti has been popping up. Mayor Martins wrote a letter to Inspector Lorraine Hannon of the 3rd Precinct on what the community and the village and the police can do to stem the tide of the graffiti. Unfortunately for property owners, it is the responsibility of the property owner who that is tagged to have the graffiti removed.
Our sympathies go out to Trustee Larry Werther and Long Island Checker Cab owner Phil Fortuna, who both recently lost their mothers.
The Mineola Civic Association will be meeting Tuesday, Sept. 27 in the community center of Mineola Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue.
