Two Muslim women wearing burkas and sitting by the kiddie pool at the Mineola facility have drawn a few complaints. The women have been cooperative and have agreed to sit far back and the pool board has agreed to slightly modify the no street clothes rule. At the opposite end of the scale several young women have been told that they are violating the no thongs rule. A couple of items were stolen during the pool season including cell phones, an ipod and a bike. Nancy Portogese Bauer, a pool board member, obtained funding to buy T-shirts for the swim team. The rule on inclement weather is if it thunders, the pool must be closed for 45 minutes and in the case of lightning, one hour. Katherine Holliday had a number of suggestions at the last open meeting saying that no smoking should be permitted anywhere at the pool. As of now, a small designated area is set aside for those who must light up.

Eileen Leone enjoyed dinner at Cugini's.

Robert Seewaldt, owner of the Robert's Men's Store, fell off a ladder while trimming a hedge and broke a bone in his back. He seems to be coming along pretty well.

Mary McGregor had a great vacation at Windham, NY.

Dolores Jose, a waitress at the Seacrest Diner, has been coaching soccer for 27 years. She and her husband reside on Roosevelt Avenue.

Had a great dinner with Walter and Grace Weismantel at the home of their daughter, Karen Mulqueen. Walter owned a bakery of the same name on Jericho Turnpike. He was a member of the pool board; his four daughters all served as lifeguards and Walter just missed being elected to the village board. Walter and Grace have been our friends since my wife, also Grace, and I were in our 20s.

Ran into Ben Rosman at Mineola Bicycle. Ben, who is retired and lives in Florida, founded Mineola Bike in 1948. While at the store met Barbara Stignari getting her bike repaired. Barbara is active in aquatic sports.

Elizabeth Vasquez of Wellington Road is a customer of Mr. Jay's. She is a retired music teacher.

Joe Torrito of Emory Road really enjoys the Mineola pool and hated to see the season end.

Joann Petrowski of Elm Place is a teacher's aide at the Willis Avenue School. Her late dad, Steve, was the center aisle usher at Corpus Christi Church for 20 years.

Dr. Jerome Kramer of Westbury is a man many members of my family have a lot of confidence in. He is a doctor of optometry and one of his assistants is Denise Arden. Denise formerly worked for Dr. Mark Reiss when he was located on Mineola Boulevard and after Dr. Reiss combined with Dr. Kramer she went to work in the Westbury office. She and her husband Rick live in Garden City Park.

The Hudson Diner on East Second Street was reopened. This was the name it bore when it first started in 1950. Many owners have come and gone. It was called the Hudson Diner several times since it is located on that east end street. It was also called Mike's Silver Diner and Matt's Diner. The new owner is full of enthusiasm and I think will be a winner. She is Paula Walsh and is helped by her daughter Shelly and her waitress Lolly.

Lou and Pat Santosus vacationed on Shelter Island. Lou is a former deputy mayor of the village.

Rose Petenza had lunch at the new restaurant on Hillside Avenue called "Delicious." Rose lives on Roselle Street.

Jack Simon lunched at the Churrasqueira. He owns Queens Bridal Shop across the street.

Teddy McCormack of Mineola likes to shop at King Kullen. She used to work for the justice department at village hall.

Some merchants have been running ads offering to pay a customer's sales tax as a special in-store promotion. Merchants may advertise the state sanctioned tax-free periods, but it is illegal for a merchant to make up his own tax-free promotion. A merchant may offer an 8 percent discount, but may not hold a "tax-free" sale. When a vendor gives a customer a sales slip or receipt, the sales tax must be separately shown.
