Mayor Jack Martins and the village Board of Trustees joined with members of the Pool and Recreation Board to officially open the 2005 pool season on Saturday, June 18. During the opening ceremony, Mayor Martins thanked the members of the Pool Board for their volunteer efforts each year to ensure that the pool remains an attractive and enjoyable facility for all Mineola residents. Mayor Martins also praised Mineola's employees who worked diligently in recent months to ready the pool for the season. In particular, Mayor Martins thanked Pool Director Dan Kopetic, Recreation Activities Coordinator Marta DeSousa, and pool operator Frank Temperino and their staff for their hard work in preparing the pool so that residents will be able to enjoy the pool during the summer months.
At the close of the ceremony, Mayor Martins noted that "there are only two things [at the pool] here today that were here when the pool first opened in 1962: the shade tree inside the pool entrance, and Trustee John DaVanzo, who was also a Trustee then." Mayor Martins added, "I think it's only fitting that we ask Trustee DaVanzo to declare the pool ready for swimming and ask him to take the ceremonial first swim." Trustee DaVanzo declined that honor, in favor of two of Mineola youths.
