This is an open letter to all who voted against the Mineola school budget.

It isn't even September and the repercussions have begun.

In the mail I received my second returned check for the summer sports program. The first check was returned because the budget failed and the fee was increased from $25 to $100; the second check was returned because the summer sports program was being canceled completely.

In addition, there will be no morning intramurals in September, among other things. The intramural program allows children to enjoy themselves before they hunker down to their studies and the summer program gives them something to look forward to by getting together to learn or sharpen different skills. I invite any one of you to explain to my son why he won't be able to participate in these activities. You may not think these are important, but to an 11-year old they are.

I am happy to be part of a close-knit community, but I never realized how closed-minded many people could be. These children are our future, and the future starts here in the Mineola School District. Please remember that today, tomorrow and next May when it's time to vote for the school budget again.
