The Mineola High School Athletic Booster Club once again sponsored its annual varsity sports dinner to recognize the accomplishments of the student-athletes who have put in many hours of hard work to achieve on the playing fields, courts and tracks.

Mineola High School had a lot to celebrate this year as many of the athletes had outstanding seasons. From the team leaders to the unsung heroes, each student-athlete has a lot to be proud of.

The biggest honor that can be bestowed upon an athlete at Mineola is the Male and Female Athletes of the Year. The honors went to Michele Guido and Tom Owens.

Michele is an All-County volleyball player who helped the team to a conference championship. She was also a member of the conference champion girls softball team. Michele is a true leader and a winner and she proved it in her final year at Mineola High School.

Tom is a scholar athlete, having been named by News 12 for the scholar athlete award. He played for the boys' basketball team and was named the honorary Reggie Carter captain in honor of the former assistant principal. Tom was also named an All-League baseball player and was a contributing member of the football team. He will be taking his talents to Notre Dame University next year.

One of the more emotional moments of the evening came when track coach Kristin Degnan spoke about "Mr. Mineola Mustang" Brian Donahue and the positive example he set for all the student-athletes. Degnan described Donahue as the most generous man she has ever met.

Donahue also gave everyone a laugh during the evening when he accepted All-County honors on behalf of his daughter Jessica, who could not be there. Jessica is All-County is the discus and All-Division in the shot-put as well as division champion in the discus.

Director of Athletics Ralph Amitrano and the coaches and parents celebrated all the student-athletes and teams. The accomplishments were many, including:

* The football team being named a scholar-athlete team

* The girls soccer team winning the conference

* The boys soccer team coming in second in the conference

* The volleyball team winning its conference and being named a scholar-athlete team

* The wrestling team coming in second in the league

* The girls basketball team being named a scholar-athlete team

* The girls winter track team winning its conference, being county runner-ups and being named a scholar-athlete team

* The baseball team making the playoffs

* The softball team winning its conference

* The girls basketball team being named a scholar-athlete team

* The girls spring track team being named a scholar-athlete team and finishing third in the conference

* The girls lacrosse team being named a scholar-athlete team and earning a playoff berth in Conference II
