Critical Budget Vote on May 17
Residents of the Mineola School District will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 17 to vote on a proposed budget for the 2005-2006 school year as well as a $10,687,373 bond referendum. Judging from the comments at a recent public meeting, it is impossible to predict whether the budget will pass.

Mineola Baseball In Conference Play
When last we wrote, the Mineola varsity baseball team had just finished the crossover portion of its schedule and headed into conference play with a record of 5 and 2. In high school baseball, the teams play three-game series against each of their league opponents. Mineola opened play in conference A-VI with a 9 to 2 win over Valley Stream North. Junior lefthander Tiago Rodrigues worked six innings and struck out 10 batters. Junior right-hander Nelson Lopes relieved and completed the game. Senior third baseman Pat Gaffney belted a two-run homer. Senior leftfielder Chris Lyons and senior second baseman Billy Campagna both had two hits. Gaffney and Campagna drove in three runs each. In game two of the series, Mineola scored three runs in the first inning, but the Mustangs couldn't make it hold up. North came back to take a 15-7 decision. North jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and went on to take the rubber game of the series 9-2. Junior Kevin Tiseo did hit his first varsity homer.

The Mineola High School varsity softball team finds itself in a very enviable position as the regular season winds toward a close and with the playoffs on the horizon. At press time, the Mustangs were 10-4 in League II, Conference II competition. It's how they got there that's interesting since the season did not exactly start out very well.
