On Monday, March 21, the ribbon was officially cut on Mineola High School's new state-of-the-art library media center. As state standards become more rigorous, and the district develops a more challenging curriculum to meet those standards, students need better resources to fulfill their academic requirements. The new media center affords MHS students the advantages they need, with many of the resources of a modern college library.
Students not only have access to the MHS Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), they may also access the OPACs of other school libraries. The center's Web Gateway allows access to the OPAC from home, via the Internet. The new library also boasts 14 different subscription databases, available both at school and at home, and 30 research lists of websites with numerous resources. Additionally, the center's two Citation Makers will help youngsters to create a "works cited" page for research papers. These databases, reference sources and research tools will help students in the completion of any assignments, reports and projects they may have.
Construction of the library has given rise to a number of additional renovations. Adjoining the new facility is a film and video editing suite, an activity center, a student lounge, a computer room, and the refurbished Student Service Center. Also adjacent to the library is a new guidance suite, consisting of a large main guidance area, flanked by the director's office and four separate guidance offices. The suite also houses the speech department and the school psychologist.
