Despite losing their first two contests in closely fought games, the Mustangs showed no lack of determination or character when they came out to face an evenly matched Sewanhaka team. Led by sophomore captains Ian Stanisic, Israel Castro and Mike Roo, the team proved their heart and desire to win.
The Mustangs put up an outstanding defensive effort, shutting out their opponent the entire game, despite three extra man opportunities. Castro was brilliant in goal in the fourth quarter, making two key saves to solidify the Mustangs' victory. The winning goal came in the third quarter when Mike Diglio put one in the back of the net off a pass from Mike Reiss who led the transition from the defensive half of the field.
Mineola hung to their one goal lead for the rest of the game in what was a great display of teamwork on both ends of the field. The freshman attack unit of Carlos Barros, John Englis and Mike Diglio did a great job of controlling the ball after key ground balls from Roo and Stanisic.
Everyone worked hard to be a part of this victory in what was truly a team effort and the beginning of many great accomplishments to come. The team's dedication is really unmatched. They put forth a great deal of effort and hard work each day and support is greatly appreciated.
