Travis Roher, a sophomore at the Wheatley School, has been selected as a member of the 2005 United States Maccabiah Basketball Junior Team. The team will represent the United States at the 17th World Maccabiah Games, which will be held in Israel this summer from July 10 through July 21. Travis was one of 10 players selected from highly competitive try-outs that were held in Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
The World Maccabiah Games is an Olympic-style competition featuring Jewish athletes from around the world. The games were first held in 1932, and the competition has been a quadrennial event since 1957. Former United States Maccabiah athletes include swimmer Mark Spitz and National Basketball Association stars Ernie Grunfeld, Dolph Schayes and his son, Danny. The United States team will compete against national teams from Argentina, Australia, England, Canada and Israel.
Travis has been a member of the Wheatley basketball program for the past three years. He played on the JV team for the past two years, and this year he was a starting guard for the varsity team, leading the team in scoring. Travis received All-Conference honors for his fine inaugural varsity season. Since 2001, Travis has played AAU basketball for the Long Island Lightning. He is also a member of the Sid Jacobson JCC boys' basketball team, which competed in the JCC Maccabiah Games in Columbus, OH in 2004. Travis will, again, compete in the JCC games later this year. "I am very honored to represent the United States and look forward to meeting other Jewish athletes from around the world," said Travis. Travis is the son of Neal and Mindy Roher who reside in Roslyn Heights.
